Indian Naval Ship Foils Somalia Pirates
An Indian navy ship, the MNS Mysore, along with a German naval helicopter captured twenty-three pirates on Saturday. The Indian ship was escorting merchant ships in the waters off Somalia. This has been a very bad area for pirate activity for quite some time. It is reported that the Indian vessel received calls for help from men aboard the MVGibe. They said they were being fired at by fast moving speed boats.
The Indian ship and helicopter sped to the scene, at which point the pirates tried to escape. Indian marine commandoes did catch them and boarded the pirates’ boats. They are reported to have confiscated seven AK-47s, several assault rifles, a rocket grenade launcher, and several other items. The pirates were from Somalia and Yemen.
