It is expected that more than one hundred million people will watch the dropping of the New Year’s Eve Ball tonight on television. It is also estimated that over one million people will pack Times Square to watch it.

It is expected to be quite cold for this years ceremonies, as there are currently winter weather advisories for the New York area.

The ball was first dropped more than one hundred years ago and was made of iron and wood. It only contained about 100 light bulbs. This years ball is said to be crystal coated, weigh almost 12,000 pounds, and have just over 32,000 LED lights. It can also display sixteen million colors, and billions of patterns.

Bill and Hillary Clinton will be on hand with NY Mayor Michael Bloomberg to push the button that drops the ball.

There will also be a heavy police presence equipped with terrorism detection, and helicopters. Police are urging the public not to bring backpacks, packages, and alcohol.
